Periodontal simply means “the tissue around the teeth.” Dr. James Smith is experienced in treating infections and issues related to the periodontal area.
Quite often periodontal-related problems are discovered after they have persisted for a long period of time. Gum disease which is most commonly caused by plaque, can be mild (gingivitis), moderate (periodintitis), or severe (periodontitis). Fortunately, all gum disease can be treated by your dentist.
Common problems associated with gum disease:
- Receding/Shrinking gums show the roots of your teeth
- Discolored or deteriorating tooth structure
- Gum depressions - holes in between the teeth in the gum tissue
- Infected gums - show discoloration or inflamed gum tissue
- Tooth loss or loose teeth
