TMJ & TMD Exams

The "Temporomandibular Joint" (TMJ), commonly referred to as the "jaw joint," assists in the basic opening and closing of the jaw. It is also commonly known for causing repetitive discomfort and pain. Although many people believe that "popping" sounds in the jaw indicate a TMJ dysfunction (TMD), this is not always true.

James T. Smith, DMD, MAGD, offers a TMJ exam that evaluates the joint tissue in the "hinge" of the jaw. Possible problems could be swelling, deterioration of the joint tissue or damaged joint tissue. Tried and true remedies such as common pain relievers and cold compresses can provide temporary relief for most cases of TMD.

However, for more serious cases of TMD, Dr. Smith will recommend alternate treatments. He may suggest using an occlusal guard to relieve teeth grinding. In some cases, he may instruct you to use orthopedic appliances to relieve discomfort or redirect positioning of the temporomandibular joint. For the most severe cases of TMD, certain invasive procedures may be recommended by the dentist.
